Dennis Emanuel was born July 7, 1948, in Iowa City, Iowa, and was raised in Ottumwa, Iowa. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1964 and received a B.S. degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1968 and Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska. Mr. Emanuel was in the U.S. Army from 1968-1970 and served in South Korea during his tour of duty. After graduation from law school, Dennis Emanuel worked as a staff attorney for the U.S. Board of Veterans Appeals (B.V.A.) in Washington, D.C., for one and a half years (1974-75) before returning to Ottumwa, Iowa, to establish a Trust Department at South Ottumwa Savings Bank. He worked as a trust officer for South Ottumwa Savings Bank for one year before entering private practice with Bailey Webber (deceased 1983) and Richard Gaumer beginning July 1976 with the Webber Gaumer law firm. Dennis has practiced law as a partner with the same law firm since 1976. He has been associated in practice with the Honorable Kirk A. Daily and William Tharp in addition to the current members of the firm. Michael Carpenter and Bryan Goldsmith have been partners with Richard Gaumer and Dennis Emanuel since February 2009. The law firm is now know as Gaumer, Emanuel, Carpenter & Goldsmith, P.C. Mr. Emanuel’s public service interests have included the YMCA, Southern Iowa Mental Health Association, and American Homefinding Association.
